Description / Abstract
There are four species within the genus Tapirus: Tapirus bairdii (Baird’s tapir), Tapirus indicus (Malayan tapir), Tapirus terrestris (Brazilian tapir), and Tapirus pinchaque (Mountain tapir). Tapirs perform important ecological roles, such as seed dispersal, nutrient cycling, and other ecosystem functions (O'Farrill et al., 2013). Understanding the environmental and spatial factors that affect where tapirs occupy is important given their conservation status, as all tapir species are listed as either ‘Endangered’ or ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List. While tapir species have been studied individually, they have not been studied collectively. Using camera trapping technology, this project aimed to perform a collaborative global study of all tapir species through a single-season occupancy analysis, integrating multiple descriptive covariates. Our study indicated a difference in response to certain covariates for each tapir species, confirming our hypothesis. This emphasizes the importance of understanding each tapir species, as each will require a tailored conservation strategy.
